Master Krishna has in excess of 108 names of which one is Govinda. Govinda implies the defender of bovines. There is a story on how Krishna got this name.

At some point, divine bovine Kamadhenu meets Krishna and discloses to him that she originated from Devlok, the realm of paradise, to play out the abhishekam, the delegated function.

Kamadhenu washes him in sacred water brought from the sky and expresses gratitude toward Lord Krishna for ensuring all the bovines. Master Indra, who goes along with them, likewise does the abhishekam and gives him the name Govinda.
