At the point when Shiva and Parvati chose to discover appropriate ladies for their children, Ganesha and Kartikeya contended regarding who is to get hitched first. Shiva bade that the person who circumvents the world in Pradakshinam could get hitched first. When Kartikeya could go round the world on his vahana, Ganesha knowing that his vahana(mushika) cannot make his travel the whole world went around his folks multiple times (for as indicated by Shastras, going in pradakshinam round one's folks is equal to going once around the globe (Bhupradakshinam)). 

Siva got Buddhi (mind), Siddhi (profound force), and Riddhi (flourishing) wedded to Ganesha. Kartikeya on his return was chafed and blew up and went to the Kronch Hills from Kailash. Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati came here and remained on with the name Arjun and Mallika. Accordingly, the spot and the sanctuary were called Mallikarjun. On observing his dad approaching conciliate him, he attempted to move to somewhere else, yet on the solicitation of the Devas, remained nearby. Where Shiva and Parvati stayed came to be known as Shrishailam. 

Initially, there were accepted to be 64 jyotirlingas while 12 of them are viewed as promising and holy. Each of the twelve jyotirlinga destinations takes the name of the directing divinity – each thought to be a diverse indication of Shiva. 

The twelve jyotirlingas are Somnath in Gujarat, Mallikarjuna at Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, Mahakaleswar at Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Kedarnath in the Himalayas, Bhimashankar in Maharashtra, Viswanath at Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh, Triambakeshwar in Maharashtra, Vaidyanath at Deoghar area in Jharkhand, Nageswar at Dwarka in Gujarat, Rameshwar at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu and Grishneshwar at Aurangabad in Maharashtra.
