It is had confidence in Hindu folklore that this spot was previously a jasmine woodland and because of its lovely smell, the semi-human goddess with dairy animals' trunk, Kamadenu lives here. Quite a long time ago, Kamadenu was reviled by ruler Shiva, when it ate meat. 

Later feeling regretful of its activity, it disposed of its transgression by washing up in the blessed water purpose of this sanctuary and loved here, as told by Lord Shiva. Subsequent to disposing of the transgression, Kamadenu offered its milk which later became Parkulam (strict significance the milk lake), which is situated behind the sanctuary.

 It is this heavenly water point (The Parkulam) of the sanctuary where Vashistha Maharishi played out a pooja here, by making a lingam with the margarine from the Parkulam. Subsequent to finishing the pooja he attempted to move that lingam, however it adhered to that place and never moved. Therefore, Vasista Maharishi viewed this spot as sikkal. 

It is additionally said that Lord Murugan had got his Vel (weapon) from his celestial mother at Sikkal, to slaughter the asura, Soorapadman in Sri Lanka. He performed Soora Samharam (strict significance: slaughtering Soorapadman) by setting up the headquarters in Thiruchendur.
