It is accepted that Lord Parashuram the 6th manifestation of Lord Vishnu, on the sets of his dad Rishi Jamadagni (see the article on Parashuram), decapitated his mom Renuka with his hatchet. Since he had carried out one of the most exceedingly awful wrongdoings of murdering one's mom, the hatchet stalled out to his hand.

His dad satisfied with his acquiescence chose to give him a shelter to which he requested his mom to be reestablished back to life. Even after his mom was resurrected the hatchet couldn't be eliminated from his hand. This was a token of the intolerable wrongdoing he had submitted.

He atoned for his wrongdoing and on taking the counsel of famous rishis of that time, he showed up at the banks of Lohit River to wash his hands in its unadulterated waters. It was an approach to scrub him of the apparent multitude of sins.

When he dunked his hands into the waters the hatchet quickly got separated and from that point forward the site where he washed his hands turned into a position of love and came to be referred to by sadhus as Parashuram Kund.
