As Kaurawas were losing the skirmish of Mahabharata, Duryodhana drew nearer Bhisma one night and blamed him for not battling the Mahabharata war to his original capacity due to his friendship for Pandavas. Bhisma enormously enraged, quickly got 5 brilliant bolts and recited mantras announcing tomorrow he will execute 5 pandavas with the 5 brilliant bolts. 

Duryodhana not having confidence in his words solicited Bhisma to give authority from 5 brilliant bolts saying that he will keep them and will restore them next morning.
